UROLOGY RECONSTRUCTIVE WORKSHOP 2024

CPD ACCREDITED WORKSHOP

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

This was an interactive workshop that showcased at least 20 surgeries, which were live streamed from 2 theatres per day from Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Midstream MediClinic and possibly Urology Hospital, Pretoria, to the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, Menlyn.

The primary objective of the meeting was to teach and to learn the most effective surgical techniques, so as to ensure each procedure was executed correctly the first time, thereby ensuring minimal occurrences of relapse and ultimately improving patient outcomes and their quality of life, which was too often very adversely affected for many years, as they were public sector patients.

FOCUS OF THE SURGERIES, TARGET AUDIENCE AND TOPICS COVERED

The focus of the surgeries was on urethral strictures, including bulbar and penile PFUD, as well as meatal stenosis, urethral diverticulum, and fistula repair. Additionally, penile prosthetics, both malleable and inflatable, were addressed, alongside male slings and male AUS (Sphincter). The primary objective of the meeting was to teach and learn the most effective surgical techniques to ensure each procedure was executed correctly the first time, thereby minimizing occurrences of relapse and ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life, which was often very adversely affected for many years in public sector patients.

The target audience for the meeting included urologist consultants, surgeons, and registrars. Essentially, all doctors working and consulting on cases requiring reconstructive surgery in South Africa and the rest of Africa were encouraged to attend. Topics covered included female urethral stricture, medicolegal aspects of reconstructive urology, difficult re-redo urethroplasty, hypospadia cripple, laparoscopy in reconstructive urology, and penile rehabilitation after circumcision injury.
